Times and Lives

The story is narrated via the point of view of the three female lead characters -  Nella, Eliza and Caroline.

18th Century, London

In the era where patriarchal society was the standard norm- in the year 1791- a middle-aged lady – 41 years old, Nella Clavinger runs a hidden apothecary shop behind a false wall in a back alley know as the Bear Alley. Unlike traditional apothecaries, her’s specializes in poisons intended to help women rid themselves of the abusive, unfaithful and/ or oppressive men of their lives. While reading, it is revealed that the apothecary shop that Nella runs was established by Nella’s mother, in a world where the medical field was dominated by men with too experimental and less awakened doctors. This establishment focused on serving females and their maladies. Once a healer like her mother, Nella, our apothecary, turned to this secretive trade after experiencing a personal betrayal by someone she trusted that not only left a lasting scar but also shattered her trust in men.

Nella works by strict rules: she only sells poisons to women, and they must never be used to harm another woman. However, her life takes an unexpected turn when 12-year-old Eliza Fanning, the second female lead, a curious and bold servant girl, comes to her shop. Eliza has been sent by her mistress, Mrs. Amwell, to procure poison for her husband, who is suspected of harming young housemaids.

Despite her usual detachment, Nella forms an unexpected bond with Eliza, who is fascinated by apothecary work and eager to learn. But when a mistake threatens to expose the apothecary’s existence, the consequences spiral beyond Nella’s control. The authorities begin closing in, and Nella’s past comes back to haunt her, putting both her and Eliza in grave danger.

Current Times, London

In the present day, 34 years old, Caroline Parcewell arrives in London on what was supposed to be a romantic anniversary trip with her husband, James. However, after discovering his infidelity just before their departure, she decides to take the trip alone. As she struggles with her crumbling marriage and the feeling that she has lost her sense of self, she stumbles upon a unique opportunity—mudlarking along the River Thames, where people search for historical artifacts.

While sifting through the mud, Caroline discovers an old glass apothecary vial with a bear emblem—the same symbol used by Nella centuries earlier. As a former aspiring historian who had abandoned her academic dreams for a conventional married life, Caroline is drawn to the mystery. Determined to uncover the vial’s origins, she begins researching its history, leading her to records of unsolved poisonings in 18th-century London.

As Caroline digs deeper, she not only unravels Nella and Eliza’s long-lost story but also begins reevaluating her own life choices. Her discovery forces her to confront her unhappiness, question whether she should return to her marriage, and consider reclaiming the passions she once abandoned.
